Well, as much as I like my new 7205 Cub Cadet I'm not too happy about what happened. At 32 hours, the hydrostatic pedal vibrated when pushed some odd noises and power was off. I called the dealer and they had it in the shop for 25 days---virtually all of July. It was a bad hydrolic pump, the one inside the frame case. I guess it was a main pump; the repairman said the rotor inside split into 2 pieces and I was getting 30% of the power. He called Cub Cadet and they said they haven't seen many of these. He was authorized to install a completely new pump...$525 for it, with labor and everything it was about $1900 which the warranty paid. Any comments? Isn't this an odd thing on such a new machine? Will this be a lemon?

That's an unpleasant thing to happen even with warranty coverage. As far as I know, hydraulic pumps (including HST pumps) have definite service lives but are pretty reliable. They can be ruined through abuse, such running with overheated oil or when cavitating for prolonged periods. However, they tend to just chug along loosing a bit of pressure over time until they are replaced Vane type pumps used on some old Fords did have a habit of flying apart, but I don't imagine the pump here is a vane type. I wouldn't worry too much about a lemon. The pump probably was manufactured at a different time and place, and maybe by a different manufacturer, than much of the rest of the tractor. ....

You didn't say of any other problems with the tractor and being a dealer and seeing a lot of equipment I would say that you shouldn't worry. I've seen new parts that are bad before. You never know when you might find something. The repair time would be longer than it should have been but spring has sprung and shops of all good dealers are full from repairs. ....

Greg, as Art stated already, it is not unheard of to come across a bad part. That is why manufacturers put warranties on things, to show that they are confident in the overall quality of their product. Generally speaking if something is bad from new it will fail very rapidly (at 32 hrs. in your case) and past that point it will be as dependable as any other comparable piece of equipment. I qualify as a 'fleet purchaser' of compacts since I buy (usually) 3 new units per year and have for many years, I think I can only remember 2 defects that were more than just nuisances in all of those units, and even then they were repaired in short order and we were back up and running. Cub's have a solid reputation, they are all made side by each on the same line, if they were junk it would be common knowledge. Best of luck. ....

I have 16hrs on my 7205 and all is well. I knew of a friend having similar problems with the hydro's but it ended up just being an o-ring. Thanks for the post though, always good to be aware of that stuff just incase it happens to someone else and it turns into something more than a coinsidence.

Murf, Thanks for the info. I'm actually not too disturbed, although the down time was long. This is why I wanted a new machine..for the warranty. I'm curious as to what type/specific model number machines you buy (for your business I assume). Do you trade in each year? What type of work do they do? Greg ....
